Laxman Narasimhan, the new Starbucks CEO, has taken control of the company 2 weeks earlier than originally planned. Having started at Starbucks on October 1st, 2022, Narasimhan had been shadowing the outgoing, interim, CEO, learning the company and industry for six months – he became the official CEO on Monday 20th March 2022.
Howard Schultz, the departing CEO, had been set to leave on 1st April, but this has been brought forward. Schultz has been CEO of Starbucks on three separate occasions (1986 to 2000, 2008 to 2017, and as interim from 2022 to 2023), and has been facing scrutiny on his anti-union, and employment & labour practices.
Narasimhan has previous executive experience; the new Starbucks CEO has been the previous chief executive of Reckitt Benckiser Group and has also held an executive position at PepsiCo. He has made a commitment to work at least one shift a month in a Starbucks store, ensuring he stays connected with employees and customers.
