As the UK market slowly reopens, most hospitality operators warn the government about a serious staff shortage. Thus, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has written to employment minister – Mims Davies – asking for help to address the issue.
The shortage seems to be caused by several factors: change of line of work during the recent lockdowns, EU nationals not returning to the UK because of Brexit measures as well as stricter labour requirements of social distancing. This shortage seems to have caught many by surprise. According to the Business Confidence Survey from CGA and Fourth, more than half of the sector leaders have found recruitment a bigger issue than anticipated and expect higher competition in recruiting in the coming months.
After a long period in lockdown, productivity has also emerged as a potential problem: recruiting and motivating existing and new staff is definitely a priority for the next months.
