New rules for pub reopening in the UK on April 12

Boris Johnson – the UK Prime Minister – has announced on Monday April 5 a first easing of the UK lockdown measures. Starting on Monday April the 12th, the step two will allow pubs, cafes and restaurants to reopen but just for outdoor serving. Along with these, non-essential shops, gyms and hairdressers will also be able to reopen. Social distancing will of course keep in place.

Pubs will be required to take details from all customers and not just one person per group (as during last summer reopening). A system for people with no mobile phones will also need to be put in place. The information will have to include contact details (name, phone number, emails) and ideally time of arrival and departure. Business operators will be allowed to use the information collected only for tracing and not for any marketing purpose. Outside serving will still be conducted based on the “Rule fo Six” – which allows gathering of max six people from up to six different households (with no limit in number if only two households are to meet).

During the Monday announcement, the Prime Minister also emphasised that no health/vaccine certification will be introduced for the moment (and neither will be on May 17 when the step three is to take place) but it does remain under discussion, especially for travelling.
